Early Years Foundation Stage

At our small rural school, we believe that every child deserves the very best start to their education. Our Early Years Foundation Stage, known as Robins, provides a warm, nurturing and stimulating environment where children feel safe, valued and inspired to explore the world around them.

Our curriculum is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Framework 2026 and is carefully designed to support each child's individual development, interests and needs. We recognise that children learn and develop at different rates, and our approach ensures that every child is encouraged, challenged and supported to reach their full potential.

Learning Together Across Age and Stage

One of the special features of our small school is the opportunity for children of different ages to learn and grow together. Our Robins provision welcomes children from the age of two, with our youngest learners sharing aspects of their school day with older children in Key Stage 1.

This mixed-age approach creates a caring, family-like atmosphere where children develop strong relationships, learn from one another and build confidence in their interactions. Older pupils become positive role models, developing leadership, independence and responsibility, while younger children learn routines, language and social skills through observing and interacting with their peers.

Shared experiences, such as snack time, provide valuable opportunities to develop communication, cooperation and independence. Older children take on additional responsibilities, while younger children gradually become familiar with expectations and routines, helping everyone to feel a sense of belonging within our school community.

A Curriculum Designed Around Every Child

Our curriculum embraces the seven areas of learning and development within the EYFS:

The three prime areas:

  • Communication and Language

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Physical Development

The four specific areas:

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the World

  • Expressive Arts and Design

Our daily timetable provides a balance of shared experiences, adult-led learning, purposeful play and carefully planned continuous provision. While children benefit from being part of a wider mixed-age group, they also access age-appropriate learning opportunities tailored to their stage of development.

Through thoughtfully organised provision, children are encouraged to follow their interests, explore ideas, solve problems and develop independence. Our practitioners carefully observe children's learning and use their knowledge of each individual to plan meaningful next steps, providing appropriate support and challenge.

We value the importance of the characteristics of effective teaching and learning: playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically. These underpin our approach, helping children to become curious, resilient and confident learners.

Communication, Language and a Love of Reading

We place communication, language and vocabulary development at the heart of our curriculum. We recognise that a rich vocabulary provides the foundations for successful learning, positive relationships and future achievement.

Through high-quality interactions, conversations, songs, rhymes, imaginative play and daily storytelling, we create a language-rich environment where children are encouraged to listen carefully, express their ideas and develop confidence in communicating with others.

We use Bug Club Phonics to provide a systematic and engaging approach to early phonics and reading, ensuring that teaching is appropriate to each child's developmental stage. Alongside this, our Book Buds approach and daily opportunities to share stories help to nurture a genuine love of books and reading.

Children are introduced to new vocabulary through stories, play, exploration and meaningful experiences. Adults model language, extend conversations and encourage children to use new words in different contexts. Our mixed-age setting further enriches these opportunities, as children naturally learn language from one another.

Small Classes, Individual Attention and Inclusive Learning

One of the strengths of our small rural school is our small class sizes, which allow us to really get to know every child as an individual. We develop strong, nurturing relationships with children and their families, enabling us to recognise each child's strengths, interests and areas where they may need additional support.

We are committed to ensuring that all children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), feel included, valued and supported to achieve their full potential. Our flexible approach, carefully planned provision and high-quality adult interactions enable us to adapt learning experiences to meet individual needs.

Working closely with parents, carers and our school SENDCo, we identify additional needs early and provide appropriate support, adaptations and interventions where necessary. Our small, caring environment allows us to respond sensitively to children's needs, celebrate their achievements and help every child develop confidence, independence and a sense of belonging.

In Robins, every child is known, every child is valued and every child is given the opportunity to flourish.

Exploring Our Rural Environment

Our rural setting provides wonderful opportunities for children to connect with nature and develop an understanding of the world around them.

Outdoor learning is an important part of our curriculum, offering opportunities for physical development, imaginative play, investigation, creativity and problem-solving. Through our outdoor provision, children experience the changing seasons, explore the natural environment, develop curiosity and learn to take appropriate risks.

We recognise that learning happens both indoors and outdoors, and we aim to provide engaging experiences that inspire children to ask questions, make discoveries and develop a sense of wonder about their surroundings.

Belonging to Our Whole School Community

Being part of a small school means that even our youngest children are valued members of the wider school family.

Children in Robins benefit from taking part in whole-school experiences, including educational visits, special events and collective worship. These shared opportunities help children develop a sense of belonging, build relationships across different age groups and broaden their understanding of the world.

Through these experiences, children develop respect, kindness, responsibility and an appreciation of others. They learn that they have an important role to play within our school community, while developing the confidence and independence needed for the next stage of their education.

Our Aim

Our aim is for every child in Robins to feel happy, secure, curious and confident, developing a lifelong love of learning.

By combining the principles of the EYFS with the unique opportunities offered by our small rural school, we provide an inclusive, ambitious and nurturing curriculum where children can explore, discover, develop friendships and flourish.

We want every child to leave our Early Years provision with strong foundations in communication, early literacy, mathematics, independence and personal development, ready to embrace the next stage of their learning journey.
